Vaijnath Temple   Beed

About Vaijnath Temple

Parali village is located between Kanyakumari and Ujjain, on the slopes of Meru or Naganarayana Mountain. It is an ancient village located near three rivers, Brahma, Venu and Saraswati, and has become famous because it is one of the twelve JyotirLingas of Shankara. There are many devotees throughout the year, especially during Hindi festivals. It is 26 kilometers from Ambejogai in the Beed district.

Vaidyanath jyotirlinga is located at ‘Prajwalika Nidhanam’ (meaning funeral place i.e., chithabhoomi) in the North- Eastern part of the country. Chidabhoomi indicates that, in olden days, this was a funeral place, where corpses were burnt and post-death ceremonies were performed.

Given here is a mythological story heard since generations. Goddess Yogeshwari of Ambejogai was to be married to Lord Vaidyanatha of Parali. But due to delay, the marriage party could not make it on time. As a result the people of the marriage party were believed to be turned into stone statues.

The following strotra suggests as to why Parali Jytirlinga is also called Vaidyanatha :

“Vaidyabhyam Poojitam Satyam, Lingametat puratamam
Vaidyanathamiti prakhyatam Sarvakamapradayakam”.

It means, the mountains and jungles and the rivers, are full of useful medicinal herbs. It is here that Lord Vishnu successfully helped the Devas to obtain Amrit. Therefore, this place is also known as ‘Vaijayanti”.

There is a story about this place was named the way it is. Once the Demon King Ravana went to Kailasa Mountain and did a severe penance to please Lord Shankara. He did not care about the winds, rains nor about anything else. Finally, when he sacrificed his nine heads and was about to sacrifice the last, Lord Shankara stopped him and asked him about his wish. Ravana said that he wished to carry Lord Shankara home. Lord Shankara gave him a linga on one condition that he must not keep it on the ground.

Ravana began the journey homeward carrying the Shivaling. On the way, he wanted to relieve himself by urination. He bid a cowherd boy to hold the Linga while he relieved himself. Many legends say that the cowherd was none other than Lord Ganesha who was requested by the gods to help them and see to it that the Shivlinga did not reach Lanka. The cowherd i.e Ganesha put the Shivlinga down and ran away..  The Shiva Linga stayed there since and the place came to be known as Vaidyanatheshwar.

Devotees of Lord Shiva believe that by sincere worship of Vaijnath Jyotirlinga a person is relieved of all worries and miseries in life. It is also said that by worshipping in the shrine a person attains Moksha and all types of happiness.
