Gnana Saraswati Temple   Basar

About Gnana Saraswati Temple

According to Mahabharatha, Maharishi Vyas and his disciples and sage Viswamitra decided to settle down in a cool and serene atmosphere after the Kurukshetra War. In the quest for a peaceful abode, he came to Dandaka forest and, pleased with serenity of the region, selected this place. Since Maharishi Vyasa spent considerable time in prayers, the place was then called "Vasara" and turned into Basara due to the influence of the Marathi language in this region.

It is also believed that this temple is one of the three temples constructed near the confluence of the Manjira and Godavari rivers.

Historically, 'Bijialudu' a Karnataka king, who ruled the province of Nandagiri with Nanded as his capital in the sixth century, constructed the temple at Basara.

The legend says that the Maharishi Vyas, the author of the Mahabharata and a central and revered figure in most Hindu traditions, along with his disciples and sage Vishvamitra, one of the most venerated sages of ancient times in India, decided to make their residence in a peaceful atmosphere after the Kurukshetra War, a mythological war described in the Indian Indian epic Mahabharata. In search of place he found the Dandaka forest, which lies between river Godavari and Narmada. Maharishi Vysa got delighted with the place and selected that place as their residence.  Maharishi Vysa spend all his time in prayers at that place and hence the place came to be called as ‘Vasara’ and was later changed to Basara.
